Caparotta joined the University of South Alabama in 1994 after completing his education at Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. In 1998, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology.
During college, he spent summers as an intern at WVUE-TV in New Orleans. He also won the Coastal Weather Research Center Award as the top graduating senior in meteorology.
Caparotta furthered his studies at Louisiana State University in 2004. In 2008, he received his Master of Science degree in Geography/Climatology. There, he finished a master’s thesis in 2008 titled “The Madden-Julian Oscillation and Tropical Cyclone Frequency Variability.” He also researched the effects of Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on tropical cyclone frequencies.
In 2012, he returned to Louisiana State University, obtaining a Ph.D. in Geography (Climatology) in 2018. There, he finished a dissertation in the summer of 2018 titled, “Madden-Julian Oscillation Relationships with Cool Season Cyclogenesis, Daily Precipitation, and Cool Season Severe Weather Frequencies in the Gulf of Mexico Region.”

Caparotta is working for WAFB, serving as a weekday meteorologist on WAFB’s 5 p.m. newscast and WBXH’s 9 p.m. newscast. Moreover, he works as an instructor at Louisiana State University. He has the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) seal from the American Meteorological Society. Further, he is a Certified Consulting Meteorologist(CCM).
Since joining WAFB, Caparotta has broadcast many big weather events, including floods, ice storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes. He won an Associated Press Award for his NOPD Looting” story from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Caparotta went through he eyewalls of Hurricane Ivan (2004) near Gulf Shores and Hurricane Rita (2005) in Lake Charles. He won the Associated Press Best Weathercast in Louisiana Award in 2009. Further, he has been a finalist for that award multiple times. The Baton Rouge Business Report mentioned him in their 2013 Forty Under 40 list. Additionally, he has received 4 Suncoast Emmys.
Caparotta became fascinated with the weather at an early age when he tracked tropical storms and hurricanes on paper tracking maps. His mentors, Bob Breck and Ken Aucoin, encouraged him to pursue a career in TV while he was interning at WVUE-TV in New Orleans while still in college.
After graduating from college, Caparotta secured his first job at KPLC in Lake Charles. He the spent several years at WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, before relocating to Baton Rouge.
