He graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, and studied meteorology through the Broadcast Meteorology Program at Mississippi State University. Simpson started television weather at a station in Greenville, South Carolina, and then moved to Huntsville, Alabama. He holds the National Weather Association’s Seal of Approval, and he was honored with an Emmy Award for Outstanding Accomplishment in Weathercasting in 1997.

In 2009, he was honored with a second Emmy Award for his coverage of the Super Tuesday tornadoes of 2008. Additionally, he speaks at churches, schools, and civic groups around the Mid-South about weather.
