He was recently inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences – Lone Star Chapter Silver Circle. Smith has also earned the National Association of Social Workers Texas Media Award, the Texas Classroom Teachers Association Silver Apple Award, and the University of Texas–Pan American Distinguished Service Award.

The City of Edinburg named Smith as one of the Hometown Heroes in 2023. Leadership McAllen granted him its 2022 Alex Longoria Leadership Award, which recognized his dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life in McAllen. Also, he was the first named member of “The Mug Club” for his work as founder and chair of A Night at the Brewseum at IMAS in McAllen.

Smith is a proud Rotarian and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Over the last 4 decades, his Coats project has helped collect over 100,000 coats for the underprivileged of the Valley. He works with several other members of the Channel 5 News Team to give Christmas gifts to children in all hospitals in the Valley during the Christmas season through the Channel 5 Toy Drive.
