Tony Rice Career
During the months leading up to the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017, he can recall working with several people from WRAL and area science museums to ensure that everyone could safely enjoy this unique occurrence. The Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, held a live viewing event of the launch of STS-135, the last space shuttle flight, on July 8, 2011.
Being a part of that day, just a few steps from where it all started 107 years ago, was humbling. He helps hundreds of other broadcast meteorologists around the country bring more space to their viewers, in addition to writing about science and space exploration on the WRAL Weather Blog. He still gives back to the group. He also helps film and television producers “get the science right” on stories involving Mars and planetary atmospheres as a volunteer with the National Academy of Sciences Entertainment Exchange.
