Previously, he served as an evening meteorologist, appearing on the 5 PM and 6 PM newscasts. As Schumacher switched to working on the weekend evenings, he expressed his pride in what he has achieved so far, thanks to the support of those around him. However, due to health reasons, he could no longer handle the demanding schedule of working 13 hours a day, six days a week, as he had done for many years.
It is Schumacher’s return to WAOW (he returned in the year 2010), after a hiatus of a couple of years, to focus on his company, Great Lakes Weather Service, as well as to spend some more time with his family. Schumacher still loves and gets excited about the weather, just like he did when he was a little boy. He has been trained and certified in using Doppler radar, and he has also been to many seminars about different weather topics organized by the AMS – American Meteorological Society and the NWA – National Weather Service.
During his leisure time, he likes to take career of her poultry (he owns a flock of chickens), garden, bike, play trumpets, play softball, ice skate, cross-country ski, and grow trees. He has planted many different kinds of trees on his land in the countryside. He and his wife spend a lot of time preserving their fresh fruits and vegetables by canning them. His most liked homemade items are currant jelly, grape juice, and squash. Additionally, Schumacher enjoys being active in his church when he is not working, or volunteering in charitable causes – he serves in the 4-H club.
