Van Denton Career

Denton works as a Chief Meteorologist at FOX 8 WGHP in Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Before joining the station, he served at WCTI-TV 12(ABC-Affiliated) in New Bern. That is where he began his TV career. Also, he worked for WBTW-TV 13(CBS-Affiliated) in Myrtle Beach. Throughout his career, he has earned several honors and awards. He holds 5 Emmy nominations for best weather in the Mid-South region of the United States. In the year 2015, he was voted America’s Favorite Weathercaster in a Weatherist.com poll of over six hundred weather people in forty-five of the largest television markets in the United States. Triad Style, Reader’s Choice Awards, and Rhino Times voted Denton the best meteorologist in the Triad.

Denton began a weather segment, “Van’s Weather Kids” in the year 1997, and in the year 1999. He gave a presentation of the segments to the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Broadcast Conference in Orlando, Florida on the Weather Kids program. Upon the presentation, other stations around the nation started the segment too. The program had been an aspiration for Denton since he visited a station as a guest at the age of 15. Denton had sent a winter forecast to WPTF-TV, a Raleigh TV station, in October 1980 and got invited to give the winter forecast on the air. Normally, kids were not invited on the air but this time they did. Denton realized that the experience was so significant that he thought it would be great to do this for others.

When Frank Deal made his retirement in the year 1996, Denton came up with an idea for the News Director and General Manager and they came up with Van’s Weather Kids. He had the phone numbers of young people he had met between the years 1990 and 1996 and called these young people to begin the program with them. The program earned 2 Emmy Awards nominations. Denton also learned so much about the business from Frank Deal. He credits Frank Deal and The late Skip Waters for his inspiration in his meteorology career. Denton has interned at WCTI in New Bern, where he met Skip Waters, who allowed him to fill in and anchor the weather on a Friday night at 17 years old when he took a vacation day.

Van Denton FOX 8

Denton serves at FOX 8 WGHP in Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina as a Chief Meteorologist. He anchors the weather from Monday through Friday, from 5 PM to 7 PM, and from 10 PM to 11 PM. He began as a weather anchor of the 11 PM newscasts, from Monday to Friday. A few months later, FOX 8 became the first station in the market with a 5 PM news and he started anchoring the newscasts.

Since joining the station, he has had an opportunity to work with the late Frank Deal and did team weather with Frank at 5:30 pm once the 5 PM newscast was introduced. Frank worked with FOX 8 from the year 1969 until the year 1996. Since the year 1969, there have been only two Chief Meteorologists at WGHP, and it is rare for many stations to have that kind of stability.
