He portrayed a South African security guard(Bota Saffas), a 1970s copper(Geoff), a greedy and closeted 1980s businessman(Leonard Lizard), a frank and ‘non-PC’ school teacher(Mr. Mills), a 1940s homosexual navy officer married to a lesbian(Pongo), Terry(a British stereotype of a handyman), and other smaller non-recurring parts.

In 2017, he portrayed a racist police officer in Detroit. Initially, he was cast as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in It and  It Chapter Two. However, the role went to Bill Skarsgård after he became unavailable after the departure of its first director Cary Fukunaga.

Poulter recurred the role of Gally in Maze Runner: The Death Cure in 2018. Later that year, he starred as Roderick “Roddy” Ayres in The Little Stranger and Colin Ritman in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. The following year, he starred as Mark in  Ari Aster’s Midsommar. He also presented Lee Mack with the Best Entertainment Performance Award alongside Asim Chaudry at the BAFTA TV Awards.
