In the spring of 1997, he was called to active duty to sandbag and monitor flood zones in the Fargo-Moorhead region during the major flooding event on the Red River while serving in the Minnesota National Guard during college.
Zimmerman’s interest in journalism started during middle school when he watched local news while growing up in Marble Falls, Texas. He caught his first glimpse of the business when his father was interviewed by a TV reporter from Austin for a story.
After joining high school, Zimmerman volunteered at a public access channel. He enjoys covering urgent news because he wants to be at whatever people are talking about.
One of his most unforgettable stories was a car break-in, where a wedding photographer’s camera was taken with a recent wedding’s photos. Astonishingly, a hiker found the camera in the woods, far from the scene of the theft, one year later. The bride thought the pictures were lost forever and was surprised beyond belief when the photos were later developed.
Zimmerman served as the only Green Bay TV reporter to broadcast both the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
