While in college, she served KEYC in Mankato, Minnesota, as an intern before becoming a part-timer remotely during her senior year in college. She also served on the leadership council of the local NWA/AMS chapter. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, where she sat on the executive board as Vice President of Intellectual Development.

She began her stint there as an intern before becoming a remote part-timer during her senior year in college. After graduating from college, she moved to Mankato and joined the weather team full-time.
Merz’s favorite part of her job is broadcasting severe weather. Though it can be fast-paced and unpredictable at times, she finds it very exciting. She also hopes that her work keeps the community safe during dangerous weather.
Merz developed her love for the weather while growing up in Minnesota, where there was a park with a tornado siren across the street from her house. Though she wasn’t scared of thunderstorms, the noises from the siren terrified her.
During 1st grade, Merz brought home a box set of weather books from a book fair at school and enjoyed looking at the pictures of tornadoes and lightning. Her love for the weather continued when she relocated to Mississippi, where she experienced numerous tornado seasons and continued to learn the workings of the weather.
Merz fell in love with journalism in high school when she joined the school’s newspaper. She later joined the broadcasting club, where she found her love for being on camera. She merged her passions for the weather, writing, broadcasting, and journalism to decide her career path while in high school, landing on broadcast meteorology.
