After retiring from his baseball career, he became a special assistant in the Washington Nationals organization. He had wanted to work for the Cincinnati Reds, but a contract dispute prevented it. Instead, he joined the MLB Network as a studio analyst in 2008.
Larkin served as the bench coach for the United States in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and managed a game when needed. The Cincinnati Reds honored him by inducting him into their Hall of Fame in 2008. Larkin moved to ESPN in 2011 as a Baseball Tonight analyst and received a warm reception from Reds fans during coverage of the 2011 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
