Smith has also served in Chattanooga and Birmingham, including at WIAT-42 in Birmingham from 2001 to 2003. He spent four years as the Chief Meteorologist at WSAV in Savannah, Georgia. He then went on to work for WFTV in Orlando, Florida. Smith was present when many hurricanes made direct landfalls in 1999, including Bertha, Bonnie, Dennis, Fran, and Floyd.
He is a licensed broadcast meteorologist. Smith claims he’s been fascinated by weather since he was in elementary school when he was monitoring snowstorms up the east coast and doing weather on the morning announcements in high school.
He was honored to receive the prestigious National Edward R. Murrow Award for continuous coverage of Hurricane Floyd, along with the WNCT team. Ben is a Qualified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) who has received seals from the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association.
