Ben hails from Fredericksburg, Virginia, and is a licensed broadcast meteorologist. He claims he’s been fascinated by weather since he was in elementary school when he was monitoring snowstorms up the east coast and doing weather on the morning announcements in high school. He attended East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, after graduating from high school, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Geography in 1996.

Ben’s first on-air job was at WNCT-TV in Greenville, NC, where he worked for five years doing weather. He went back to school and got a degree in broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University while working at WNCT. Ben has also served in Chattanooga and Birmingham, including at WIAT-42 in Birmingham from 2001 to 2003. Ben spent four years as the Chief Meteorologist at WSAV in Savannah, Georgia. He then went on to work for WFTV in Orlando, Florida. Ben was present when many hurricanes made direct landfalls in 1999, including Bertha, Bonnie, Dennis, Fran, and Floyd.

He was honored to receive the prestigious National Edward R. Murrow Award for continuous coverage of Hurricane Floyd, along with the WNCT team. Ben is a Qualified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) who has received seals from the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. Ben is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) who has earned seals from the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. He also sits on the seal assessment committee of the National Weather Association.
