Fitzgerald’s earlier experiences include being an anchor/reporter at WVTM in Birmingham, Alabama, for half a decade. He also had the opportunity to report in New York City in the aftermath of the 9/11 attack while on loan to WNBC. Additionally, he traveled to Texas to report on the Columbia shuttle disaster. Fitzgerald began his career as a “one-man band” reporter on Long Island, New York, working for News 12 Long Island.
