In regard to his profession, Stephens serves at KCTV 5 News as an evening news anchor, appearing on the 4 PM, 5 PM, 6 PM, and 10 PM newscasts. Before joining KCTV, he worked for FOX 35 – WOFL-TV in Orlando, Florida as a main news anchor for half a decade (from August 1999 to July 2004). He has also worked for stations in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Lincoln, Oregon; and Omaha, Nebraska, as a news anchor and reporter.

Growing up in Nebraska, Stephens, like many others in the central plains, learned to respect the power of tornadoes. However, nothing could have put him on the preparation for the devastation caused by a massive, deadly tornado. In May 2011, Stephens and his colleagues at KCTV covered the aftermath of an EF-5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri. They reported on the shocking destruction and tragic loss of life that forever changed the city and its residents.

In an interview, Stephens shared the devastating aftermath of the tornado, describing the widespread destruction of businesses and homes and the tragic loss of 161 lives. Despite the sorrow, Stephens has revisited Joplin, MO several times to witness the inspiring resilience of its people and the city’s remarkable recovery. Through his work in news reporting, Stephens has had a firsthand view of the ups and downs of community life, providing him with a unique perspective on the human experience.

Only a few years after the challenging events of the 2011 spring, Stephens had an exhilarating experience covering from San Francisco as the Kansas City Royals made their unlikely journey to the World Series with the Giants in the year 2014. He says that he also fondly remembers the excitement of covering the Royals’ World Series win against the New York Mets the following year at Kauffman Stadium, which he considered his second home.

Stephens takes pride in his contributions at KCTV. Throughout the years, he has been fortunate to receive multiple nominations for Emmy awards. In the year 2016, Stephens was especially honored to win 2 Emmy awards. One was for a story where KCTV collaborated with the Overland Park Fire Department to showcase how quickly house fires can spread.
