Higgins works as a meteorologist at FOX 2-KITV News. He began his career in journalism as an intern at FOX 2-KITV in the year 1990. Previously, he had moved to Joplin, Missouri, and served as the Chief Meteorologist for KODE-TV for about two years. Later in 1994, he relocated to St. Louis and served as a weekend meteorologist at FOX 2. In addition to that, in the year 2014, he moved to the lead forecaster for Fox 2 News and aired the 11 p.m. newscasts throughout the week.

Higgins has won various awards for his outstanding performance in his journalism career. He was honored with the first of his eight Emmy awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Science for weather forecasting and reporting in October 2002. In July of 2006, he became the first ever meteorologist from St. Louis to receive the American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation. He was commissioned as an officer in the Air Force Reserves in the month of June 2003.

He deployed to the deserts of the Middle East in support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the year 2008. Due to this, he was honored twice as the United States Air Force Weather Officer for the Reserve Component. He sent out the first real-world Tornado Watch ever issued by the United States Air Force, in 2013. During that time, he was still serving on the Storm Prediction Center backup team. In 2019 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel he brought to light that he wished to retire as a Light Colonel in 2023.

Higgins makes lots of public appearances at local schools talking about the importance of staying in school, the weather, and the importance of serving the community. During his leisure, he enjoys doing outdoor activities including trying to stay fit by hiking, taking walks, running, or working outside in his yard. In 1998, he graduated from De Smet Jesuit High School. Later in 1992, he graduated from St. Louis University and obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology.
