Johnson attended Morehead State University in 2005 where he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in mass communication and media studies in 2008. While at Morehead State University, Johnson was a member of PI Kappa Alpha, National Broadcast Society, MSU TV Channel 77 News, and Served for 3 1/2 years as Chapter Treasurer.
Johnson later joined Western Kentucky University in 2011 and attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology in 2014. While still at the University, Johnson worked for Kentucky Mesonet as a Mesonet Operator between May 2012 and May 2014. There he was responsible for making daily data checks to diagnose possible equipment failure for each station throughout the state. Johnson started his career as a Research Assistant at the Kentucky Mesonet from May 2012 to May 2014. He also published his scientific work, “Evaluating Weather Research and Forecasting Model Sensitivity to Land and Soil Conditions Representative of Karst Landscapes” in Boundary-Layer Meteorology.

Prior to joining FOX 56, Johnson worked for Hearst Television the CBS affiliate in Louisville, Kentucky where he served as a Meteorologist a position he held from May 2019 to January 2022. Before joining Hearst Television, Chris served as a Morning Meteorologist, Weekend evening Meteorologist, and primary fill-in for Chief Meteorologist for WKYT-TV from June 2017 to May 2019.
Before working for WKYT-TV, he worked for WYMT from June 2015 to June 2017 where he served as a chief Meteorologist on Mountain News This Morning. Johnson previously worked for WNKY-TV from June 2013 to June 2015 serving as a Chief Meteorologist. Throughout his career as a Meteorologist, Chris won several awards which include the 2017 AP Best Weathercast, the 2017 AP Best Social Media, and the 2019 AP Best Weathercast.
