Farmer started her career at WSLS TV 10 in Roanoke, Virginia. During this time, she was a student at college. Upon graduation, she went to work for TV 10 in Roanoke and worked full-time as an anchor. From there, she moved to the Good Evening Show in Greensboro based out of the studios of WFMY. Farmer then became a part of the News 2 reporter team in the year 1992. 

Throughout her career, she has won several honors and awards. She holds the Susan G. Komen Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award, Emmy Award for Community Service, and the Howard Coble Citizenship award. Also, she holds The Susan G. Komen Founders Award, as well as the USTA Grady Elmore Award for contributions to tennis.

When it comes to education, Farmer is a proud alumnus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. She graduated from there with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism.

During her leisure, she likes playing tennis or watching any sport Virginia Tech Hokies are playing.
