Cole Johnson Career
Johnson serves KYMA as the NBC Sports Director. He joined the station in March 2021 as a morning anchor. Previously, he served WPRI Media & Marketing as a sports intern for 3 months. He grew up in Moravia, New York, a little hamlet of slightly over 3,000 people known for President Millard Fillmore and Fillmore Glen State Park. When he joined the Blue Devil Broadcast in his sophomore year of high school, he discovered a talent for reporting, anchoring, and editing. Even though he was “very BAD!” at the time, he knew he wanted to be on camera.
He was the play-by-play voice for various sports at Medaille and produced a podcast/radio show covering all Medaille sports, all while interning at WIVB Channel 4 and two stints at WGR Sports Radio 550. He was a beat reporter for Syracuse football and basketball, as well as a member of the ACC Network and a reporter/anchor for the student-run show “Mornings on the Hill.”
Cole joined the ESPN Ithaca team outside of school to commentate and cover Section IV high school basketball for their radio broadcasts. He earned his Master’s degree with an internship at New England Nation on WPRI 12 Providence, where he covered the New England Patriots during training camp.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, he also used his time at home to finish a two-and-a-half-year project. One Team, One Dream, One Family was a project he developed, shot, and edited into a documentary that was released on DVD and Amazon Prime Video in September 2020. Cole is a die-hard New York sports fan who never misses a game (NY Giants, NY Yankees, Syracuse).
He’s ecstatic to begin his new adventure in Yuma, especially because he’ll be “getting away from the chilly winter in New York.” He’d also want to thank Ernesto Romero for taking a chance on him after seeing his clip on YouTube! Cole is eager to wake up every morning with the Yuma-El Centro audience and give them the greatest coverage to start their day.
