Bickford has also held the position of president three times for the Society’s Upstate Chapter. Dan’s fascination with weather dates back to his childhood, sparked by the sound of tornado sirens. This curiosity led him to pursue studies at the University of Oklahoma, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in meteorology. During his time at university, Dan further indulged his interest in severe storms by conducting research at the National Severe Storms Laboratory and spending two spring seasons as a storm chaser for KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City.
Additionally, he served as the weekend meteorologist for KSWO-TV in Lawton, OK/Wichita Falls, TX, during his college years. Dan was also the captain of the University of Oklahoma water polo team for two years. Following his graduation in December of 1993, Dan assumed the role of chief meteorologist at KOAM-TV in Joplin, MO/Pittsburg, KS, where he served for seven years.
During his tenure, he actively engaged in severe weather education, participated in a local emergency management group, and contributed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Project Impact campaign to mitigate severe weather losses. In addition to his meteorological pursuits, Dan indulged in a hobby as a radio personality for KXDG-FM in Joplin for four years. In his leisure time, Dan enjoys classic cars, swimming, hiking, and following Chicago sports teams (as well as those from Oklahoma).
