Dashiell is a proud 1980 alumnus of Washington and Lee University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. In regard to his profession, Dashiell serves at WDBJ 7 News as a senior reporter. Other than reporting on stories in Virginia, Dashiell also often goes to Richmond to report on the General Assembly and other important statewide stories.
He has worked in 3 WDBJ7 news bureaus, beginning in Lynchburg in the 1980 fall. He helped set up the New River newsroom in the year 1982. After 3 years, he moved to Richmond to report on the Governor’s Office, the Virginia General Assembly, and state politics. In his 5 years in Richmond, he was chosen to be the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association president.
Over the years, he has won many awards and honors for his excellent work in reporting and anchoring. For Distinguished Performance in Broadcast News in the year 2009, Dashiell was given the George A. Bowles Jr. Award by the Virginia Association of Broadcasters. Two years later (2011), the Roanoke Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference honored him with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service in Media Award. In the subsequent year (2012), the Roanoke Branch of the NAACP honored him at their annual Citizen of the Year Awards.
Dashiell has won both regional and statewide recognition for his reporting. In the year 2014, he received a regional Emmy Award for his series “Virginia Roots & Tennessee Dreams: The Legacy of Patsy Cline” and another regional Emmy Award in the year 2016 for a series commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Flood of 1985. He also earned a regional Edward R. Murrow Award in the year 2010 for his series called “Headlines in Hard Times.”
In the year 2016, Dashiell was given the first Adam & Alison Award for Media Excellence by the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Three years later (2019), he received The Associated Press Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award, and he was also welcomed into the Silver Circle by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the NATAS – National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Besides journalism, Dashiell has also indulged himself in production. One of his favorite projects is a 60-minute program about the Old Fiddlers Convention’s 60th anniversary in Galax.
