During his time, he has taken a lead reporting role on several significant stories, including the 2018 Congressional Race in North Carolina’s District 9, the extensive gas leak along the Huntersville section of Colonial Pipeline, and various local responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before joining the Charlotte news scene, Derek spent nearly seven years as a reporter and weekend anchor at WHNS-TV (FOX Carolina) in Greenville, covering news in both North and South Carolina. He reported on elections and primaries in 2012 and 2016, covering major crime stories, and severe weather events, and anchoring live coverage on the life and passing of Reverend Billy Graham.

Derek’s career also includes notable moments such as one of the first interviews with former CIA director Porter Goss after the death of Osama bin Laden, achieved while working as a reporter and fill-in anchor at NBC and ABC stations in Fort Myers, Florida.
