After working as Director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami from 2012-2017, Dr. Knabb will come to The Weather Channel. While at the NHC, he oversaw the implementation of numerous programs to modify the way the public recognizes and is alerted to hurricanes, tropical cyclones, and their consequences.

Dr. Knabb contributed to the development of the watch and warning system for storm surges, which highlights coastal and lowland regions at risk of floods and storm surges, frequently the largest threat from cyclones and hurricanes to life and property.

Knabb is a trusted weather speaker. He led the monitoring of major disasters, including Hurricane Irene in 2011, during his first stint on The Weather Channel. As NHC Chief, during extreme weather disasters, including Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016, he supervised the hurricane center staff.

Dr. Knabb worked as Deputy Director of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu prior to his first stint on The Weather Channel. Dr. Knabb worked at the National Hurricane Center in Miami as a Senior Hurricane Expert and Research and Procedures Officer before that. During many historic weather incidents, including the announcement of Hurricane Katrina’s formation over the Gulf of Mexico in 2005, he coordinated and provided official forecasts.

When coming to his education, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University in Atmospheric Science. Dr. Knabb graduated from Florida State University with a Master of Science and a Doctorate in Meteorology and conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Hawaii. He is a member of the Meteorological Society of America.
