After her graduation from college, Rivas took her first job in television news as an anchor and reporter in Yuma, Arizona. She went back to the Lone Star State to live and work in El Paso since her heart still longed for Texas. While in Texas, she covered the intense impact of the 9-11 attacks on immigration and border traffic.
Rivas was recognized for her work by earning the regional and national RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for her continuing coverage of child abduction and murder in El Paso. Between her work on substance abuse and documenting teenage alcohol, she received a National Communicator Award of Distinction and also a first-place award in Serious Feature reporting from the Texas Associated Press.
Rivas is an evening newscaster currently reporting in Houston. She enjoys hearing from her viewers about the stories she covers and the latest ideas for stories. Elissa is proud to join the Adult Reading Center of Pearland since her parents pressured her on the importance of education.
