Byrd has been passionate about the weather since she was young. She used to study the weather on the front porch, where she watched and listened to thunderstorms. It was then that she got hooked on the behavior of the atmosphere. She says that there was never anything else that she aspired to do than study the weather. She would leave the dinner table to catch Meteorologist Frank Deal on FOX 8 every evening at 6:16 PM, who always had a report from “our man” and shared a funny joke. Cynthia Smoot and Fred Blackman were the ones leading the newscast while Rich Brenner signaled time to go back to the dinner table and finish eating. When 2 young upstarts (Van Denton and Neill McNeill) joined Frank Deal on FOX 8, Byrd was always asking herself whether those were their real names!
