Thorstenson has become the Best Sportscast four-time and has received some Associated Press awards. In 2006 and 2007, he was the South Dakota High School Coaches Association Sportscaster of the Year. He worked his way up through the rank at Dakota News Now where in January 2020 he moved to a morning anchor serving from 5 am to 7 am.
