Thigpen graduated from Madison High School in 1979. He took on a part-time DJ role at WMAF while working full-time at Dixie Packers in Madison. His dedication and talent quickly earned him the opportunity to step into the station manager’s role at WMAF. However, this proved to be short-lived as the station faced financial challenges, prompting Thigpen to seek other opportunities.

From a young age, Thigpen had a deep fascination with meteorology. While his peers engaged in typical childhood activities, Thigpen was checking temperatures and rainfall throughout the year, driven by his genuine interest in weather phenomena. “I just did it because it was fun and I found the weather fascinating,” he recalled.

But Thigpen’s interests extended beyond weather; he also had a passion for radio. Often, he would imagine having his radio station, using a walkie-talkie positioned between two bricks to keep the “talk” button engaged. He would then ride his bicycle around, testing the range of his makeshift station while honing his DJ skills.

Thigpen joined the WGXA Weather team in January 2020. Before his time at WGXA News, Gary gained extensive experience in radio and television broadcasting in Florida and Georgia. This included a two-year period as a news/talk co-host and over two years as a weather forecaster at another news station in Georgia.

Originally from Florida, Gary moved to middle Georgia in 2002. Having grown up in Florida, he has encountered numerous hurricanes and severe weather events, fostering his passion for weather forecasting and broadcasting from his teenage years onward. When not at the WGXA weather center or covering weather events, Gary enjoys spending time with his pet rabbit, Bun Bun, and indulging in his favorite cuisines, such as BBQ and traditional country cooking.
