Watson serves at CNN as a senior international correspondent based in Hong Kong. In the early stages of his career, he was a producer for CNN based in Russia and a reporter for NPR. He has covered civil unrest in Egypt, conflicts in West Africa, the War In Afghanistan, Haiti’s Second Chechen War, and the Iraq war.
He has reported on major news events from Hong Kong such as the Hong Kong protests, the Christchurch terrorist attack, the Thai cave rescue, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the Sri Lanka Easter bombings, the Lion Air plane crash, and the spread of the novel coronavirus across Asia for the last six years. Furthermore, he has led long-form investigative pieces such as the Race to Save the Reef and the 30-minute documentaries Borneo is Burning.
For twelve years he was based in Istanbul before he relocated to Hong Kong in 2014. During his time he has covered the “Gezi Park” Occupy protests and the rise and reign of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He charted the deadly government crackdown on protesters in neighboring Syria and the country’s descent into civil war.
While he was still documenting the surge of refugees across the border into Turkey, he made many trips to rebel-controlled parts of Syria. Furthermore, he also made a report in Iraq on the ethnic and sectarian cleansing of hundreds of thousands of minority Christians and Yazidis by the militant group known as ISIS.
He has worked at NPR, where he reported on major stories around Central Asia, West Africa, and the Middle East for eight years. Some of his investigative stories include the United States-led overthrow of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001 and the United States invasion and troubled occupation of Iraq.
Additionally, in the late 1990s, he served as a Moscow-based producer for CNN before later joining NPR. Furthermore, he covered the sinking of the Kursk submarine in the Arctic, the Russian war in Chechnya, and other stories.
For his reporting, he has been recognized several times. At the ContentAsia Awards in 2020, ‘ Borneo is Burning’ his documentary was awarded Best Current Affairs Programme. Additionally, for his coverage of the Haiti Earthquake in 2010, he received two Emmy awards, he was also honored with the Royal Television Society’s Best News Coverage in 2013 for Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. When coming to his education, he received a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Brown University. Additionally, he is eloquent in French and Russian.
