Before joining WTVR, he was a student in college. While in college, he interned at WTVR, where he worked in the sports department for 4 months (May – August 2009). Over the years of his career, he has reported on many stories in Central Virginia such as the D.C. Navy Yard tragedy, the Wallops Island rocket explosion, and former Governor McDonnell’s corruption trial. Burns was responsible for leading CBS 6 report of the 2016 election, where he provided live coverage from New York City on election night and the Vice Presidential debate.
Throughout his career, he has won several awards and honors for his work, such as 1 National Press Photographers Association regional award and 3 regional Emmys. In the year 2012, he was named “Best New Face on TV” by Richmond Magazine.
When coming to his eudcation, Burns is a proud alumus of Maryville College, where he spent 4 years (2006 – 2010). He graduated from there with a Bachelor’s Degree in Writing/Communications. During his stint at the institution, he served as a Highland Echo and Sports Editor for nearly 2 years.
