Roach’s journey into TV news was sparked by her interest in the NFL, but not in the way one might expect. She says that it wasn’t about football plays; it was about her passion for writing and delivering speeches on topics she cared about during her high school years with the National Forensic League. This early experience led her to a career where she essentially does the same thing professionally.
Throughout her time on TV, Roach has been at the forefront of covering significant national events, from the September 11 terror attacks at the Pentagon to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. She also created a documentary called “Donovon,” which delved into the controversy surrounding Donovon Lynch’s police shooting in Virginia Beach. This case ultimately resulted in a $3 M settlement between the Donovon Lynch family and the Virginia Beach police.
She has received many awards for her work, including 3 Edward R. Murrow Awards, 12 Emmys, and 3 national Telly Awards. Her most recent Emmy, earned in June 2023, recognized her documentary on the growing fentanyl crisis. Roach’s documentary titled “20 and Odd: Africans’ Arrival in 1619” tells the story of the 1st Africans who were enslaved and went to English North America in 1619 in Hampton, Virginia. This documentary not only won Roach 2 National Gold Telly Awards but also an Emmy Award.
Roach has also shed light on the challenges of navigating the complicated mental health system through her documentary “Looking For Happiness,” which tells the story of a mother from Norfolk, who advocated for proper care for her autistic and mentally ill son. That documentary won an Emmy. Roach became an inductee of the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of NATAS (the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) Silver Circle, in the year 2020, recognizing her significant contributions to the broadcast industry.
Roach strongly believes in supporting her community. She dedicates a lot of her time to speaking with children’s and women’s groups. In the year 2021, the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast recognized Roach as the Famous Former. Roach is also part of TEGNA Inc.’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team, where she represents 64 local news stations nationwide. Additionally, she is actively involved in the General Alumni Association’s Board of Directors. During her time in college, Roach became an inductee of the highest and oldest honorary society at the University of North Carolina, “Order of the Golden Fleece”. Also, Roach received the annual Martin Luther King Scholarship – the award is granted to one student each year for their dedication to improving campus life.
Roach is actively involved in the NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) and First Baptist Church Denbigh in Newport News. When it comes to her education, Roach is a proud alumnus of the University of North Carolina, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Public Policy Analysis and an emphasis on communications.
