Jason Austell Career
After 12 years, TV newscaster Jason Austell left KNSD/NBC 7 to join XETV-TV/Channel 6 as the weekday evening anchor in July 2016. Then, CW6 finished its newscasts in March and Austell was out of work. KUSI-NEWS/Channel 9 has now recruited Austell to co-anchor its “Good Morning San Diego” weekend version with Elizabeth Alvarez (6 to 11 a.m.).
Austell graduated from Escondido High School in San Pasqual (class of 1984). After attending Palomar College, Austell moved to work on the radio in Whitefish, Montana. He returned to San Diego to work for local radio stations as a traffic reporter (1990-1997). He then spent the next six years (1997-2003) as a KFMB-TV/Channel 8 traffic reporter, before joining KNSD in 2004. Austell was on board the first news helicopter in San Diego fitted with a gyro-stabilized camera in 1997.
Austell spent four years (2004-2008) traveling as a traffic and news reporter for KNSD in a helicopter. Then in 2008, when Bill Menish quit becoming a professional auctioneer as to the morning anchor, Austell asked for a tryout and got the position. Austell spent the next 8 years on the “NBC 7 News Today” morning show as an anchor.
Jason was the reporter and photographer aboard the first news helicopter in San Diego to be fitted with a gyro-stabilized camera in 1997. Jason was the “point man” for traffic and breaking news for the next decade. He filled all of them with brush and building fires, rescues, high-speed car chases. Jason’s thousands of hours in the skies above San Diego give him a very special view of the county.
