In his quarter century with the station, he has assisted in guiding viewers of Action News during every news happening, large and small. He joined the 6 ABC News team on June 1st, 1976. Upon joining the station in 1976, he initially served as a reporter and anchor of Action News at Noon.

Upon joining the station in 1976, he initially served as a reporter and anchor of Action News at Noon. Nonetheless, he debuted his broadcast journalism career in 1986 when he served s at Columbia while he was a student. While there he covered the unforgettable student riots at Columbia in 1968.

Succeeding his graduation, he served in New York at WINS Radio. Further, he served in White Plains, New York at WFAS Radio in 1972 for two years. However, he began his TV broadcast career when he served at WKBW-TV in Buffalo.

In his quarter century at the anchor desk and in the field, Gardener broadcasted major local, national, and international stories. Even so, he is most proud of his vitality and stability, of being present at 6 and 11 relentlessly for four decades.

Also, he values his involvement in the community and his opportunities to give back to various organizations. Particularly, he is proud of the fact that one broadcast journalism student at Temple University has been awarded the Jim Gardner Scholarship to aid pay for their education every year since 1987.

Jim Gardner Retirement

After over 40 years, on January 11, 2022, Gardener served as an anchor for his last frequently scheduled 11 p.m. broadcast. However, he still serves as an anchor on the 6 p.m. news broadcasts on Action News. He is set to retire at the end of 2022.

On January 12th, 2022, Rick Williams will take up the 11 p.m. newscast as per the WPVI-TV Philadelphia President and General Manager, Bernie Prazenica, and Vice President of News, Tom Davis.
