Souza was injured in October 2021 by a blast from a pretend gun fired by actor Alec Baldwin while filming Rust. Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, was killed in the event. He is recovering after being shot with a pretend gun fired by producer and actor Alec Baldwin on set Thursday, October 21, 2021, and says he is “gutted by the loss of my buddy and colleague” Hutchins, who was killed.
“She was compassionate, energetic, very talented, fought for every inch, and constantly pushed me to be better,” Souza told NBC News in a statement. When Baldwin discharged the prop firearm, Hutchins was working as the director of photography on “Rust” alongside Souza in Santa Fe, New Mexico. According to officials, Hutchins was evacuated by helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, while Souza was brought to a hospital by ambulance. “My sympathies are with her family during this trying time,” Souza stated.
