John Burchfield Education
Burchfield joined Cornell University in 2012 after completing his studies at Sylvania Southview High School. In 2016, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology, Applied Economics and Management.
While in college, Burchfield was involved with the Cornell Chapter of the American Meteorological Society, Phi Sigma Kappa, and was a treasurer for High Rise Community Hall. He also worked as a fill-in meteorologist for WENY in Elmira and interned at WTOL 11.

The Toledo native fell in love with wild weather when he was very young. Northwest Ohio weather, like severe storms, winter weather, and temperature swings, captured his interest. He built a green screen in his basement and uploaded local weather forecasts to YouTube while drawing inspiration from his childhood models. Further, he went to a summer weather camp at Penn State University. While at summer camp, he built a tornado simulation chamber for a science research project.
After graduating from college, Burchfield launched his professional meteorology career at ABC21 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Besides broadcasting, he shares weather updates on-air and on social media.
