John Gumm Education
Gumm is a proud alumnus of Valparaiso University, where he studied from 1993 to 1997, and graduated from the university with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology. While there, he also assisted in creating one of the biggest storm-chasing groups in the nation.

His forecasts appear every weekday on Cincinnati’s top-rated evening and afternoon newscasts (5 PM, 6 PM, 10 PM, and 11 PM). Before joining Local 12 – WKRC, he worked for WWL-TV in New Orleans, Louisiana as a meteorologist.
Gumm has worked for WCTI-TV in New Bern, North Carolina, and WHBF-TV in Rock Island, Illinois, as a meteorologist. In his tenure in New Orleans, he earned multiple accolades for his work such as an Associated Press award. This award was for Best Weathercast in Louisiana.
Gumm became interested in the weather when he was young. When he was in sixth grade at Brantner Elementary in Mt. Carmel, his teacher asked the class to write about their biggest dream in life. He wrote about wanting to be a meteorologist and help save people from dangerous hurricanes. He didn’t know it then, but years later, his dream came true.
In August 2005, Gumm faced a tough situation while working as a weather forecaster. He was in New Orleans, employed by WWL-TV when Hurricane Katrina struck. He had to work continuously for twelve hours, going live on TV to inform people about the dangerous hurricane. It was only after his on-air duty ended that he could finally evacuate his wife and newborn son. After the broadcast, John received many letters and emails expressing gratitude from people he had convinced to leave the city and stay safe.
Gumm was designated as Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) by the AMS(American Meteorological Society). This designation is better than the AMS Seal of Approval. It requires the successful fulfillment of a very comprehensive examination of operational & theoretical meteorology, general science, and forecasting.
During his leisure time, he likes to speak and mentor the area schoolchildren, teaching them more about the weather. Also, he likes hanging out with his friends and family, swimming, biking, tinkering with computers, and hiking. Additionally, Gumm enjoys following FC Cincinnati, the Bengals, and the Reds, and dabbling in app development, when he is free.
