Knicely serves at WOWT-TV (NBC Affiliate) in Omaha, Nebraska as a News Anchor. He serves as a live co-anchor at 4 pm, 5 pm, 6:30 pm, and 10 pm nightly on WOWT 6 News. This is Knicely’s second stint at WOWT. He worked for WOWT-TV as a sportscaster from the year 1974 to the year 1981. From there, he moved from Omaha to St. Louis to work for KTVI-TV (the ABC affiliate) as a sportscaster. After that, he moved back to Omaha in May of 1984, but this time to work for KETV (ABC affiliate). In May of 1992, he returned back home to WOWT — east or west home is the best! He is now thrilled to be working with the WOWT news team. He feels it’s his best place to be.
Since joining WOWT-TV, he has become a favorite in the community via his “Knicely Done” and “John at Work” news features. Knicely has given viewers a unique behind-the-scenes perspective via his reporter-involved segments, over the years. The segments have included; joining TV tower repairmen at 1,200 feet, sky diving, riding an Olympic bobsled, working construction on West Dodge Expressway and the First National Tower, a daredevil stunt plane ride. Also, serving as a middle school principal and performing on stage at the Omaha Playhouse.
When it comes to his education, Knicely is a proud 1974 grad of the University of Nebraska Lincoln School of Broadcast Journalism. Throughout his career, he has earned multiple awards, including the Journalism Alumni Award of Excellence from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Knicely involves himself actively in the community and emcees a variety of charity events annually. When he is not working, he likes being active in his church and sits on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes State Board. Also, he serves as a teacher of Sunday school to 5th- and 6th-graders.
