During his leadership at WJHL, the station has won numerous awards including Tennessee Associated Press awards for Best Sports Story, Best Sports Video, Best Sportscast, and Best Sports Talk Show. In 2004, he won the Virginia Associated Press Best Sports Department Award, making WJHL the sole station outside Virginia to win that honor.
In high school, Hawkins helped in the development of “Sportscenter 7,” a high school sports show airing on local cable stations in Oak Ridge, Oliver Springs, and Clinton. Aside from journalism, he is actively involved in the community, serving organizations like Doe River Gorge, Relay for Life, Speedway Children’s Charities, the United Way, and St. Jude’s.
Hawkins was the co-founder of the Diabetes Association. He has worked as the organization’s honorary chairman of the Tri-Cities chapter of Step Out Walk for Diabetes.
Hawkins serves on the board of directors of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame following his nomination as Lieutenant Governor. In 2005, he was inducted into the ETSU Communications Department Hall of Fame.
