Smith debuted his TV career at WICD in Champaign, Illinois. He worked there briefly before moving to Knoxville where he served WBIR and West Palm Beach where he served WPTV. CNN then hired him as a sports anchor and correspondent based in Atlanta.

In Atlanta, Smit broadcasted over big championships globally including six Super Bowls, a dozen Final Fours, and four Olympics. Additionally, he worked as a regular host for broadcasts of Major League Baseball playoffs and NBA TV’s “Gametime” for Turner Sports.

Smith spearheaded CNN’s broadcast of the end of Major League Baseball’s players strike in 1994 and was the lead correspondent for the Michael Vick saga. He was the first to interview Michael Phelps after he clinched a record eight gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

After CNN, Smith worked as a news anchor at WCPO in Cincinnati, WGCL in Atlanta, and WJLA in Washington, D.C. In Washington, he broadcasted the presidential inauguration in 2017 and was awarded a Regional Emmy for his report about the launch of the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture.
