During his tenure at KPIX, he received an Emmy Award for enclosing the March 2011 tsunami in the Bay Area and Best Weather anchor.

Karnow started his TV career at KSBW-TV where he served as a meteorologist from 1986 to 1997 in Salinas, California. While at KSBW-TV, he made a report on the Central Coast agricultural stories.
