Mary King Career
King serves at WBTV as a co-anchor of WBTV This Morning alongside John Carter from 4:30-7 am. She came to WBTV from her sister station, WIS-TV, in Columbia, South Carolina, where she spent more than seven years as the morning anchor and reporter at the station. Mary helped lead the WIS Sunrise team during her tenure at WIS to four Southeast Regional Emmy Awards for Best Morning Newscast, including two 2017 Emmys in the same category.
For her reporting, Mary has also earned many Emmy awards, including her live field coverage of the historic floods in South Carolina in October 2015. Mary has anchored continuous coverage of many big stories in addition to the 1,000-year flood, including the deadly assault on nine parishioners at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of SC State House.
Mary had been the morning anchor and a reporter for WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, Maryland until she was in Columbia. For her reporting in that field, she won an Edward R. Murrow Award. Prior to that, Mary affirmed her passion for journalism when she interned at the FOX News Network and MLB.com in New York City, as well as WCCB-TV in Charlotte.
Mary’s new passion is fueled by her love for individuals and the world. She is part of a number of non-profits on the board, including those working to raise awareness of homelessness, childhood cancer, and children with special needs.
Mary coordinated a station campaign to raise awareness about the need for bone marrow donors through the Be The Match National Marrow Donor Program during her tenure at WIS, inspired by a young girl who courageously battled cancer. The campaign helped to register hundreds of potential donors and was recognized in 2018 by the SC Broadcast Service Project of the Year.
Mary has served regularly as an emcee for numerous community events at the Governor’s Carolighting, the SC State Highway Patrol DUI Law Enforcement Awards, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Light the Night Walk, including the lighting of South Carolina’s State Christmas tree.
When coming to her education, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Troy University in Troy, Alabama, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Although working full-time, she also earned her Master’s Degree in Strategic Communications from TROY. For her reporting at TROY, Mary won many awards and was named Outstanding Senior by the College of Communication and Fine Arts and Outstanding Junior by Phi Kappa Phi.
