In an interview, about his experience at WFAA, Howerton expressed his admiration for the channel, which had been a constant presence in his household while growing up. He observed the way legendary journalists informed and inspired viewers, handling significant moments in Texas history with class and passion. He emphasized the sense of devotion that permeates the station, from the floor crew to the news director, and expressed pride in being a part of such a dedicated team.

Prior to joining the station, he had worked at a TV station in Waco and Albuquerque, New Mexico. While there, he covered various significant events. In Albuquerque, Howerton reported on extensive reform within the police department, officers’ misuse of body cameras, and an officer shortage that resulted in poor response times and increased crime rates.

He also covered the aftermath of the EPA’s accidental spill of mine waste into the Animas River in the Four Corners region in 2015. During his time in Waco, Howerton was the first journalist on the scene to report on the tragic fertilizer plant explosion in West, which claimed 15 lives.

He also earned an Emmy Award nomination for his coverage of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, where he highlighted female inmates producing Braille pages for blind students. Howerton’s reporting on the second deadly shooting at Fort Hood in 2014 also earned his station, KWTX-TV, 2 Emmy Awards.

Howerton is very passionate about telling stories that bring about change. He says that achieving a perfect society is impossible but believes that working towards it and shedding light on important issues are crucial steps. When coming to his education, he is a proud alumnus of Baylor University.
