Melissa Block Career

Block is an American Journalist and radio host who currently serves as a special correspondent and guest host of NPR’s news programs. Her work has earned her numerous awards in journalism, and she is one of NPR’s most well-known and well-liked voices.

Block’s reporting carried her from the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to the heart of Rio de Janeiro; from rural Mozambique to the northernmost reaches of Alaska as co-host of All Things Considered from 2003 to 2015. Her compelling reporting from Sichuan, China, during and after the devastating earthquake in 2008 brought sorrow to millions of listeners across the world.

Block had the foresight to record a compelling, real-time narration of the seismic upheaval she was witnessing at the time the earthquake struck. Judges who awarded NPR’s earthquake coverage the top honors in broadcast journalism: the George Foster Peabody Award, duPont-Columbia Award, Edward R. Murrow Award, National Headliner Award, and the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award, singled out her long-form story about a desperate couple searching in the rubble for their toddler son.

Block’s reporting on subjects ranging from gun violence to adult illiteracy to opioid addiction now engages both the heart and the mind as a special correspondent. She traveled across the country in 2017 for the series “Our Land,” visiting a variety of towns to investigate how our identity is impacted by where we live. She paddled the Mississippi River, went salmon fishing off the coast of Alaska, and accompanied an immigrant family as they became citizens of the United States for that series. In 2018, she won a James Beard Award for her report about the Chinese community in the Mississippi Delta.

Block received the 2019 Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism from Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, as well as the Fulbright Association’s 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award. She began her career as an editorial assistant for NPR’s All Things Considered in 1985 and ascended through the ranks to become the program’s senior producer.

She worked as a reporter and correspondent in New York from 1994 to 2002, during which time the terrorist attacks of September 11 shaped her career. Following the attacks, her reporting helped NPR win the George Foster Peabody Award. The Overseas Press Club of America honored NPR with the Lowell Thomas Award in 1999 for Block’s reporting on rape as a weapon of war in Kosovo.
