Wankum has previously held the position of Chairman for the Chornobyl Children Project USA and remains engaged in multiple local charitable causes. Wankum is a part of the American Meteorological Society and holds the title of Certified Broadcast Meteorologist.
When coming to his education, Wankum is a proud alumnus of Briar Cliff University. He is also an alumnus of Creighton University, where he studied Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology. While there, he covered various weather events such as Tornado Alley, and participated in multiple tornado chases in his early career.
During his leisure time, Wankum likes riding a motorcycle (he is a licensed unprofessional road racer). He really loves riding his motorcycle, especially at New Hampshire Motors Speedway. Wankum also applies his racing knowledge to teach local law enforcement motorcycle officers about safe high-speed riding as part of the Fishtail Riding School.
