O Yeong-su (real name – O Se-Kang) is a South Korean Actor well-known for appearing in many shows and films such as “Squid Game”, “Squid Game: The Challenge”, and “Chocolate”. Some of the other shows he has appeared in are “God of War”, “Queen Seondeok”, “1st Republic”, “The Return of Iljimae”, “The Fairy Of Shampoo”, and “A Little Monk”.

Theatre Appearance

Yeong-su started acting in theater, in the year 1963 with a group called “The Square.” For 23 years (1987 – 2010), he was part of the National Theater Company of Korea, working alongside famous actors like Jang Min-ho, whom he sees as his mentor. During his career, he took part in various productions, including The Merchant of Venice, A Streetcar Named Desire, and A Confession for a Black Prostitute, among others. As of the year 2013, Yeong-su had been in more than 200 productions.

When Yeong-su was in his 30s, he acted as Faust in “Goethe’s Faust”. Looking back, he thought he might have been too young for the role. In his 50s, he played the main character, Richard III. In the year 2014, Yeong-su played Prospero in a National Theater of Korea show of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, marking the 450th anniversary of William’s birth.

Yeong-su took on the role of Yeonguijeong in the play Prince Yeonsangun and appeared in The Problematic Figure in July 2015. He also played Vasíly in the play Fathers and Sons, based on the novel of the same name, in August 2015. In the year 2017, Yeong-su starred as the main character, King Lear, in a production with the Daegu Metropolitan Theater Company. He had previously performed King Lear at the Daejeon Museum of Art in the year 2010. In the following year, it was announced that he would portray Sigmund Freud in the play “Freud’s Last Session”, set to debut in Daehangno on January 7, 2022.

In addition to his work in the theater, Yeong-su frequently acts as a monk in movies and TV shows. He attributes his background in Buddhist plays to landing similar roles in TV and film. In the year 2021, he took on the role of Oh Il-nam in the popular Netflix series Squid Game, which quickly became the most-watched show on Netflix globally in its first month. This brought renewed attention to Yeong-su. In November 2021, he provided narration for an episode of the documentary program “Documentary Three Days.”

In the year 2022, Yeong-su became the ambassador for Korean performance tourism, appointed by Park Bo-gyoon, the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. During the first day of the Korean Series (2021), Yeong-su threw the first pitch.

However, the show brought him unexpected fame, making him feel like he was “floating on air.” This newfound popularity led to him winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries, Series, or TV Film. Yeong-su became the 1st actor in Korea to win a Golden Globe. He also got nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

On November 25, 2022, announcements were made by prosecutors in Suwon, stating that Yeong-su was charged with sexual misconduct for something that happened in the year 2017. He faced trial, and the prosecution accused him of indecent assault for allegedly making inappropriate physical contact with a woman. The woman who said she was harmed first told the police about it in the year 2021. There isn’t much information about what exactly happened, but the person claims there was unwanted touching when she met Yeong-su. The police received the report and looked into it but decided not to transfer the case.

However, prosecutors in Suwon started investigating again in the year 2022 after the person formally objected. Yeong-su said he didn’t do anything wrong and called the person’s claim “one-sided.” He told the local broadcaster JTBC that he “held her hand to give directions around the lake” but denied the allegations of sexual misconduct.
