Pete Byrne Career

Byrne serves WSBT as sports director. He joined the station in 2006 and has served the station for more than 1 and a half decades. Previously, he served KVLY as a sports anchor and a host from 2003 to 2006. Pete’s two decades in sports writing have taken him to the Super Bowl, the World Series, playoffs in all four major sports, the PGA Tour, the Frozen Four, the Final Four, and the national championship game of college football. The nicest part of covering sports for WSBT 22 is being at home and cheering on his favorite teams.

Pete grew up in South Bend and attended Trinity High School, where he participated in basketball, baseball, and a little soccer. He acknowledges, “I was the goaltender.”  For hundreds of hours, he served behind the scenes at Notre Dame as the equipment manager for the football and hockey departments. He is a member of the monogram club at Notre Dame.

Pete has received several honors during his time at WSBT 22, including one for his Notre Dame football coverage. The Associated Press named him the best sports reporter in Indiana two years in a row, in 2014 and 2015. The Forrest “Woody” Miller Award, granted by the South Bend Community School Corporation for achievement in high school journalism, was given to him in 2018. Pete returned to Michiana and WSBT 22 in 2006 after covering sports in Minnesota and North Dakota for seven years.

Pete is ecstatic to be back in his hometown, covering his beloved Fighting Irish as well as his other favorite local teams, the Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks. He’s also glad to be back covering some of the top high school sports in the country, such as Hoosier Hysteria, which he calls “the best high school basketball in the country.” Don’t be shocked if you run into Pete at a local golf club, promoting a game he can’t play! When not on the links, he likes to spend his free time at the gym and (surprise) watching sports.
