Rachel Lucas Education
Lucas joined Concord University in Athens, West Virginia after completing her studies at Giles High School in 2006. In 2010, she graduated with a Bachelor Of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism.
During college, she served as the president of her sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha, and competed for Concord’s All-Girl Division II cheerleading squad. Further, she was crowned Concord’s 2009 Homecoming Queen. She kickstarted her news career in college at the college news station and a reporting internship for West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

There, she debuted WVVA’s first news bureau in Greenbrier County and broadcasted everything including the storm damage following the derecho and the excitement of the PGA Tours Greenbrier Classic.
As a front-line reporter at Virginia Tech, Lucas helped her news team to win the West Virginia Broadcasters Association Best Spot News Award for their broadcast of the fatal shooting of a Virginia Tech police officer. One of her favorite memories from working in Bluefield was when a bear or any other wild critter paid a visit to the newsroom.
Lucas has broadcasted various topics like breaking news in weather, the ruinous EF3 tornado that hit Appomattox, politics, the environment, top crime stories, economics, and health. She also loves broadcasting stories that display the strengths of the community and its people.
Lucas strives to spotlight local businesses in a local business spotlight beat as part of a collaboration with The Advancement Foundation. She serves as a volunteer of The Advancement Foundation. Additionally, she is a true animal lover who enjoys broadcasting topics that educate the public about conserving wildlife. Away from the newsroom, she volunteers at the Southwest Virginia Wildlife in Roanoke.

In 2019, she received another promotion to weekday anchor on Virginia Today, eventually securing her dream position as 10’s evening anchor.
At WSLS 10, Lucas has helped the station clinch several awards including for team broadcast of multiple breaking news events across the area such as her investigative reporting of the aftermath of the Lynchburg train derailment, which spilled thousands of gallons of Bakken crude oil into the James River.
Lucas is familiar with the Appalachian Mountains as she grew up in Giles County. Thus, she is thrilled to deliver the news for the place she calls home. She is more attuned to the issues that impact the region as she has obtained the trust of WSLS 10 viewers. She appreciates the viewers because she has been and always will be a member of the community.
