Richard then joined The World as a Middle East correspondent, a program produced by BBC World Service, Public Radio International (PRI), and WGBH. From 2001 to 2003, he worked there before moving to USA Today, and later to Reuters, AFP, and Jane’s Defence Weekly.

Richard eventually joined ABC News as a freelance journalist, covering the initial invasion of Iraq by U.S. forces. He then moved to NBC, serving as the primary Iraq correspondent. In 2006, he covered the war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon as a senior Middle East correspondent and Beirut bureau chief. In 2008, he was named Chief Foreign Correspondent of NBC News, and in May of that year, he interviewed U.S. President George W. Bush following his speech to the Israeli Knesset.

In 2009, Richard covered the August presidential election in Kabul, Afghanistan, and reported on the Egyptian revolution in 2011. While covering the Libyan Civil War, he narrowly escaped being shot. That same year, he toured and reported from Mogadishu, Somalia, earning a News and Documentary Emmy Award nomination for his segment.
