Besides working as a journalist, Cardwell enlisted in the US Air Force with the intention of pursuing a career in dentistry, immediately after he graduated from high school. However, after a few years of working with dental patients, he decided to change his professional path.
In the year 1990, the US Air Force accepted him for cross-training and now had the opportunity to attend Defense Information School. Following his training, the Air Force deployed him to Osan, South Korea, where he took on the role of a DJ for “Good Morning, Osan!” He also served as an afternoon producer for the Armed Forces Korea Network TV news reports. The following year, Cardwell was stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. It was during this time that he made the decision to leave the Air Force and venture into the field of journalism.
Cardwell is an active member of Ironbridge Baptist Church in Chester, Virginia. He also participates in various local fundraisers and events, supporting both community and state organizations. During his leisure time, Cardwell likes to camp, fish, hike, or root for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
