Robert Speta Education

Speta studied Operational Meteorology at the United States Navy Aerographers Mate C School from 2008 to 2009. In 2012, he joined Mississippi State University and graduated with a Bachelor Of Science degree in Operational/Broadcast Meteorology in 2015.

Speta is working for WJXX serving as a broadcast meteorologist. In 2005, he joined the US Navy as a Naval Weather Forecaster (Aerographers Mate). He launched his career in Jacksonville at Naval Station Mayport. Thus, he is familiar with the significance of the weather to the local military activities.

Speta was transferred to Japan in 2009 aboard the USS Blue Ridge. In this role, he traveled and forecasted in many countries across East Asia and the South Pacific. Further, he won several Naval Achievement medals including for his support during the retrieval endeavors following the March 11th Japan Tsunami. 

Speta serves as one of the few American meteorologists who have marked and forecasted radiation fallout in an active operational scenario. He switched to broadcast TV in 2012 when he served NHKWORLD, Japan’s largest TV Station.

During his time at NHKWORLD, Speta broadcasted global weather events including reporting and filming on active volcanoes and inside Super Typhoons. Further, he worked freelance for multiple stations during harsh weather events across East Asia including The Weather Channel, CNN, and the Science Channel.

Speta returned to the U.S. in 2017, joining WHEC in Rochester, New York. While at WHEC, he received an Emmy Best Evening Newscast Award. Further, he reported live from the flash flood that ruined the town of Lodi in Upstate New York.

In 2019, Speta returned to Jacksonville to serve the US Navy as an aviation forecaster, a role he holds while still at First Coast News. Further, he works as a consultant for international shipping and agricultural companies, chiefly in East Asia.
