Elving is an American journalist who serves as a senior Editor and Correspondent on the Washington Desk for NPR News. He also works as a professorial lecturer and Executive in Residence at American University’s School of Public Affairs, where he has also taught at the School of Communication. The University Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching in an Adjunct Appointment was bestowed upon him in 2016. He has also taught at George Mason University and Georgetown University.
He formerly worked for USA Today and Congressional Quarterly as a political editor. The Brookings Institution and the American Political Science Association have both published his work. In the scholarly works Obama in Office (2011) and Rivals for Power (2013), he provided chapters on Obama and the media, as well as the media’s role in Congress. Ron’s last book, Conflict and Compromise: How Congress Makes the Law, was published by Simon & Schuster and is now available in paperback from Touchstone.
From 1999 to 2014, he was the manager of NPR’s Washington desk, where the desk’s correspondents won every major prize in radio journalism, including the Dirksen Award for Congressional Reporting and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Edward R. Murrow Award. NPR received the Carey McWilliams Award from the American Political Science Association in 2008, “in appreciation of a major contribution to the understanding of political science.”
Ron arrived in Washington in 1984 as a Congressional Fellow with the American Political Science Association and served on the House and Senate staffs for two years.
