Ross Ellet Career
Ellet serves at 13abc as a weekend meteorologist and weather reporter. During the nearly historic Great Lakes ice coverage of both 2014 and 2015, his favorite story was reporting on the ice-breaking mission of the Coast Guard. An Emmy award was given to Ross and photojournalist Todd Gaertner for the story. Now, on Action News This Morning, you can catch the Ross forecasts every weekday. Ross has been given the title of Accredited Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), the highest approval seal provided by the American Meteorological Society.
Ross had this passion for weather and forecasting, even as a child. By making his own forecasts at the age of 5, he would watch TV every day and attempt to compete with forecasters. “I was just guessing at the time, and everyone laughed,” Ellet said. Just down the turnpike in northeast Indiana, outside the small town of Albion, Ross grew up. There he witnessed snow, blizzards, ice storms, tornadoes, floods, and heatwaves with the lake effect. His intense passion for meteorology was sparked by extreme weather.
Ross’s broadcasting career began as a weekend meteorologist in 2005 at WLFI in West Lafayette, Indiana. Two years later, in southern West Virginia, he accepted the position of Morning Meteorologist. He was promoted to Chief Meteorologist of the station after 3 months on duty.
For KHBS / KHOG in Arkansas, the next chapter of Ross’s career took him straight into the tornado alley. A devastating ice storm covered the Ozark Mountains in 1-3 “of ice just two months after Ross arrived. Power was out in places for 3 weeks. The spring season also brought flooding and violent tornadoes.
While there, he received awards for his extreme weather coverage and a special story on Arkansas black bears where he had to carry a wild baby bear. In Columbus, Ohio, Ross has spent some time working for the Ohio News Network and WBNS. When coming to his education, Ross graduated with his degree in Meteorology from Purdue University, and a minor in Communications and Sociology.
He’s a huge fan of the Indiana Pacers and Colts and enjoys adventure, traveling, camping, hiking, photography, and astronomy.
