Ruth Sherlock Career

National Public Radio’s Ruth Sherlock works as an international correspondent. She reports from Beirut on Syria and other Middle Eastern countries. She covered the 2016 US election as the Daily Telegraph’s US Editor. She was the Telegraph’s Middle East correspondent before coming to the US in the spring of 2015.

During the Arab Spring, Sherlock covered nearly every upheaval and battle. She spent the entire fight in Libya, reporting from the front lines of the opposition. She went undercover in regime-controlled areas in Syria in late 2011 to document the arrest and torture of anti-government protesters. She paid smugglers to travel into rebel-held portions of Syria from Turkey and Lebanon as the violence intensified. She also made contacts on the regime’s side of the conflict and was granted rare access to areas controlled by the government.

She was named Young Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards for her coverage of Libya. Her investigation of the Syrian regime’s continued use of chemical weapons earned her a nomination for the British Journalism Awards in 2014. She has been a finalist for Amnesty International’s Gaby Rado Award for human rights reporting on two occasions. Her reporting for the Embedded podcast for NPR was shortlisted for the coveted Livingston Award in 2020.
